Don’t steal. It’s a lesson that children are taught from the youngest age and a core principle in every society. The PSGroove sets out to follow this mantra in several ways. It is an open source implementation of the PSJailbreak hardware we covered a couple of weeks back. It’s difficult to find a definitive source of information on that hardware but many have speculated that the original device contains stolen code. Whether that’s true or not is moot as the PSGroove doesn’t include the backup manager program alleged to violate copyright.

The device is also aimed at running homebrew, and doesn’t natively allow one to play backups. It runs on a variety of AVR hardware, including the Teensy boards. If you have one of them, it’s just a matter of compiling the code and unlocking the potential of your PlayStation 3.

Control-Q is the “Oh, hi Honey!”-button. It instantly quits (all of) your firefox windows. Nice feature when you’re surfing for porn, but during non-porn-related surfing (… wait … what?) it’s very annoying to accidentally hit Control-Q when you meant Control-W and suddenly all your tabs are gone.

Since i have eight desktops to switch to and no Honey walking around the house, i have no use for such a function. As it seems there is no way to disable this ‘feature’ from within the standard Firefox UI, an addon had to be found.

Enter ‘keyconfig.xpi‘ (mirror).
At the time of writing, this addon was not available through the ‘Get Add-ons’-feature in Firefox.

Install the addon, restart Firefox, and you’ll find a new menu entry in the Tools menu called Keyconfig…. Click it, pops a window, you’ll be able to rebind and disable a lot of keys.

One of which is ‘Quit [File]‘.

So much win.

I searched the web for clues with keywords like ‘quickly allocate space for large file’ and such, but this did not bring me to the widely know concept of ‘sparse files‘. Ofcourse i knew about sparse files, my favorite torrent client uses sparse-files to pre-allocate space for downloads! Why didn’t i think of that immediately…

For the sake of findability, i’m posting how to quickly create huge files on disk when you dont care about the contents:

While ‘ls‘ sees a 50G large file, the actual on-disk size of the file is 0 bytes. It’s a sparse file.

Perhaps this helps someone in the future.

It’s friday afternoon and i am at home with a broken metatarsal bone. Normally i would be enjoying a cold beer with my colleagues at work but due to the broken bone, i am somewhat immobilized.

My colleague, Arjen, started all this, this friday, and tweeted:

Host OS

My host-os is a debootstrap’ed install of Ubuntu. The idea being that my host-os doesn’t need to run anything else than the essentials needed to provide networking, storage and VMs. Because i work with the GUI of virt-manager, i had to install some X11-packages and enable SSH X11-forwarding to pull the GUI to wherever i am.

Networking on host-os

My host-os has a dedicated IP. All my VMs have their own IP in a /29 IP-netblock assigned to me. This /29 is routed to my host-os’ dedicated IP by my ISP but i have not configured any of these IPs on my host-os. The host-os only has a route for the network on it’s br0 bridge interface so it knows this traffic is ‘local’ to it:

IPv6 is autoconfigured by router advertisements on the network but because MAC-addresses in virtualised setups tend to change i add a static IPv6 address to each server. The static IPv6 address is in the same network as the EUI64 autoconfigured address, so this works routing-wise.

And since my host-os does not function as a gateway for the VMs, i can now use all of the eight IPs routed to my host-os IP. None are lost to network, broadcast and gateway addresses.

Networking on VMs

To use the eight IPs from the /29 and not route them myself, i had to manually configure routing in the VMs. I use ‘ip’ from the iproute package. It beats ifconfig by a long run:

So, i up the link, configure the IP-address as a /32, add a route for the network this VM is in and add a route for the network my host-os’ gateway is in. This last step is essential since the default gateway is in another network and we need to tell the VM how to reach it.

Then there’s the only weak-spot in this design. I manually add a static ARP-entry for the default gateway. Somehow ARP doesn’t do it’s thing, so the VM in 213.154.236.176/29 doesn’t get the MAC-address for the gateway automatically. I have not looked into this yet.

IPv6 on VMs is autoconfigured by router advertisements on the host-os network. They travel across the bridge-interface to the VMs that are connected with it. This means it is once again really easy to configure IPv6 on the host. Just add a static IP and use the route info from router advertisements.

Storage on host-os

My host has 4 disks, all partitioned as follows:

These twelve partitions are used in mdadm software-raid:

md2 : active raid1 sdd2[1] sdb2[0]
md3 : active raid5 sda3[0] sdd3[3] sdb3[1] sdc3[2]

The function of each of these RAID-arrays is explained below:

• /dev/md0
  Is used as the ~10GB root-fs for my host-os.
• /dev/md1 and /dev/md2
  Are both used as swap-partitions. I intentionally made this two arrays over two disks to double the swap-space it would offer.
• /dev/md3
  This ~3TB device is used as a PV (physical device) in the VG (volume group) ‘vms’ which provides LVs (logical volumes) for my VMs to use as ‘raw block device’-storage.

A little more on the LVM-setup. The complete /dev/md3 device is one PV for VG ‘vms’. Each VM has just one LV in this VG which functions as the ‘raw disk device’ for the VM:

Storage on VMs

My VMs, if Linux, run LVM on their ‘drives’ too. This way i can resize partitions inside the VM and the entire VM’s ‘drive’ too!

If i run ‘partprobe‘ in my host-os, i can see the partitions of my VMs in my host os:

So as you can see, LVM on the host-os sees the VGs and LVs created inside the VMs. If i had used encryption in the VM-installation, the VM-disks would not be available to the host-os, ofcourse.

KSM Kernel Samepage Merging

A really nice feature in 2.6.32+ kernels is the Kernel Samepage Merging feature. Basically this maps memoryblocks that are identical to another memoryblock so that only one copy of data is kept in memory for both allocations. It means VMs share memory that has the same content and this immensely decreases the memorypressure of VMs on the host-os. More information on the subject can be found on the internet.

My setup shares ~400.000 pages on average. Each page is 4096 bytes large, so this makes for 1.52GB of shared memory. Which is just marvelous.

Concluding

I migrated from a ’single host setup’ to this ‘virtualized setup’ after a disk-crash with my old system. I had good backups and was able to restore mostly everything. This gave me the opportunity to split up my own stuff from stuff i host for friends. They now ‘live in their own VM’. Also, i introduced a VM dedicated to ’services’, like DNS, SpamAssassin, MySQL, etcetera.

While this all seems to work really nice, i am now faced with how to efficiently backup all essential configuration and data from these VMs. Requires a different strategy as with a ’single host setup’.

Happy for now. Performs very well. Finally my hardware is stable.

World Science Festival 2009: Bobby McFerrin Demonstrates the Power of the Pentatonic Scale from World Science Festival on Vimeo.

What’s being shown in the video is really the reason why music is universal to all cultures. The audience knows what notes McFerrin is jumping to because they can literally feel them.

Here’s the brief bit of physics behind it:

The major pentatonic scale is formed by taking the 5 “fifths” in succession. If you start on C, you get the notes C, G, D, A, and E. Put those into a single octave and you get the scale of C, D, E, G, A. (In solfege, this is “Do, So, Re, La, Mi”, rearranged to “Do, Re, Mi, So, La”).

These “fifths” are formed by a fundamental ratio in nature of 3:2. (If middle C rings at 291 Hz, then the fifth above it, a G, rings at 392 Hz). The notes’ waveforms will literally line up in space.

That lining up is felt in our bodies. That’s why the audience can sing those notes.

It’s also choirs will nearly always go out of tune only on the 2 notes *not* in the pentatonic scale – in C major, that’s F and B (or Fa and Ti).

McFerrin knows this well, it should come as no surprise that the melody to “Don’t Worry Be Happy” is pentatonic. Which is why it’s so catchy and memorable.

Using the ‘grub-pc’ package for your bootloader, change the following lines in /etc/default/grub:

This disables splashscreens and tells init (Upstart) to be verbose. Next is the “graphic mode” console, to disable this change /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf or create /etc/modprobe.d/fuck-plymouth.conf and add the following line:

blacklist vga16fb
blacklist fbcon
blacklist tileblit
blacklist font
blacklist bitblit
blacklist softcursor
blacklist vgastate

Final step is disabling Plymouth. These packages are ‘deeply nested’ in some essential Ubuntu packages. Removing them requires some extra effort. The simple approach would be to remove any file matching /etc/init/plymouth.* so the shit doesn’t get started. Have to repeat it during upgrades. Don’t forget to create a backup if you plan to fail.

Packages matching /^plymouth/ can be removed (at your own risk). Some Ubuntu packages depend on Plymouth like ubuntu-desktop which can safely be removed but might mess up future upgrades. I have not noticed any problems after ‘working around’ these dependencies:

Perhaps i had already removed ubuntu-desktop earlier as i only had ‘cryptsetup’ depending on plymouth. So i was like:

Now cryptsetup did not depend on Plymouth anymore. Here be dragons: removing libplymouth this way breaks mountall. This binary is linked against libply.so.2 and would require a recompile.

Doing all this gives you a text-based boot. No fancy progress-dots and fugly logos. You’ll notice that Upstart output differs from SysV-init output. Also, upstart ‘hides’ the child process’ STDOUT & STDERR which makes debugging of problems more of a challenge.

Galaga running on scrapmame

Before getting there I had to do some creative wiring, as it seems I cut some corners with wiring up the controller. A few separate ground-points were connected, however this was causing interesting signals on the analog joystick axes. A lot of trial-and-error later it seems I have clean inputs from all buttons and the digital joystick.

I still need to hook up the second stick (which will hopefully arrive from DX this week), some buttons (insert coin, start game) and a usb keypad (for misc buttons). A set of speakers should also arrive this week, allowing the scrapmame to make a decent amount of noise.

Next week I’ll probably fit in the PC (I’ve been using my laptop for testing so far) and then I’ll start on the launcher/menu interface.

I’ll try to add some more pictures of the inside of the cabinet later.

The first bit was unsoldering/cutting the wires on the sacrificed PSX controller and then connecting new wires to the solder-pads

The yellow wires are for the direction buttons, white for the 4 fire-buttons and blue is the common ground.

After a long soldering session the result looked like this:

A few more solder-pads were connected to ground wires (or each-other) and the red wires connect to the shoulder-buttons and analog-stick buttons of the PSX. The 2 new yellow wires connect to ’start’ and ’select’.

This would give me a total of 16 buttons wired to a single PSX controller. On the mame cabinet this will translate to a sets of 4 directional buttons and 3 fire buttons for each player (2 players) and 2 remaining buttons for ’start’ or ‘insert coin’… I’m not too sure yet about what would be the ‘best’ combination.

Lastly, before calling it a night, I wired up the ground-connections on the joystick section, so I only need to bring 5 cables up to the stick ( and not 8 )

Next time I plan to connect all the wires to plugs that connect to the buttons (still need to buy the correct sized plugs) and joystick microswitches (which you can see in the background of the first picture)

The project is a self-built Arcade cabinet, which at this time has been called ‘ScrapMAME’, as it’s been built completely out of scrap-materials.

I have built the frame and outsides of the cabinet from wood boards that were originally bolted onto the windows in the workshop, together with some wood beams that were still lying around the space.
The buttons and joystick have been ordered from DealExtreme, and the first batch has arrived. Hopefully my second shipment with the remaining parts will arrive soon.
I’m using this arcade stick, and these buttons from DX. The buttons will be wired to the pcb of an old PSX controller, which will be connected to a PSX->USB adapter.

2010/06/26: The buttons and joystick arrived, so I could finally drill the holes.

There is still lots to be done… which will be added as soon as I get to it ;P

In de kelder is het ook nog eens koud. Gister toen ik naar buiten kwam in het zonnetje, voelde dat echt heerlijk. Terwijl je het dan pas koud krijgt, voel het warme zonnetje lekker aan en sta je gewoon een paar minuten te genieten om warm te worden.

Nog een paar minuten, een stuk of 18 volgens de timer op me Desire. Over 18 minuten zou de back-up klaar moeten zijn en kan ik een volgende starten. Als die daad werkelijk klaar is, de aftel logica van het back-up programma is niet altijd even betrouwbaar. Het kan zo nog maar eens 15 tot 20 minuten langer duren. Ach, en daarna de volgende back-up.. geschatte tijd 50 minuten. Ik zit hier nog wel even.

De radio heeft ruis erdoor heen. Op welke knoppen ik het ook probeer, het wordt niet veel beter. Dan is het maar tijd voor me iPod. De CrapFM uitzending van gisteravond. Verzoekplatenfestijn, een zeer leuke uitzending met een verschillende verwachte en ook onverwachte/onbekende nummers. Nummers die ik niet kende, maar wel leuk zijn. Zo leer je nog eens wat muziek kennen. Vanavond eens kijken of er van die artiesten wat in Spotify te vinden is. Of de rest van ze ook zo leuk is.

En zo loopt de volgende back-up. Geschatte tijd door de applicatie is 20 minuten. Eens kijken hoeveel er dat werkelijk gaan worden. Ik schat op een 40 minuten.

De eerste paar nummers voor een volgende verzoekfestijn staan alweer in een lijstje. Van die nummers waar je aan gaat denken als je andere nummers aan het luisteren bent. Owja, dit en dit nummer. Van die nummers waar je normaal niet aan denkt. Behalve als je in een koude kelder zit met een muziekje en een timer. Een timer om back-up voortgang te controleren.

De back-up is dan eindelijk bijna klaar. Nog een twee minuten, ook al kunnen dat er nog drie worden, dan is die klaar. Kan ik de boel weer terug zetten en hier gaan opruimen. Vergunning inleveren en opwarmen in het zonnetje. Terug naar kantoor om maar daar de administratie bij te werken met wat ik allemaal gedaan heb. Hoe ver de voortgang is en dat soort meuk. Een nee, dit stukje typen komt daar niet in te staan.

The second and third issue are closely related in that both cause undesirable load spikes because many things happen at the same time, either because of intervals phasing up or because of similar jobs running on a bunch of machines at the same time, perhaps hammering the network.

A specific pet peeve is Mailman Reminder Day. Firstly, I just don’t see the point; if my address is on a mailing list and that list is practically dead, I just don’t care. Secondly, it means every first of the month I have tens of reminders that I just delete. Some of these lists are busy — for those, the reminder is a minor nuisance. But many lists are extremely quiet (think software release announcements) and for some of these lists, the reminders are over 50% of the total mail volume. It’s so wasteful. Also, I can’t help but think that all those reminders being sent out at the same time (well, divided over 24 hours because of time zone differences) cannot be good for the mail ecosystem as a whole.
